For this month’s reading we will be switching our focus away from the book of 1 Kings to 2 Chronicles. 2 Chronicles covers the same material as 1 Kings, but from the perspective of the Southern Kingdom (Judah)! After the death of Solomon, the kingdom split into two halves—the Southern Kingdom (Judah) and the Northern Kingdom (Israel). The author of Chronicles focuses purely on the history of the Southern Kingdom of Judah. His goal is show what it takes to build a truly godly kingdom.
Your assignment this week comes from 2Chronicles 10, 11. Chapter 9 closes with Solomon’s death and Rehoboam’s ascension to the throne. After you have spent some time reading and thinking about chapters 10 and 11, answer the questions below:

- After ascending to the throne, Rehoboam was asked if he would relieve the people of the burden placed upon them by his father Solomon (i.e. forced labor, heavy taxes). Do you believe Rehoboam responded WISELY to their request? Why or why not?
- Why do you think Rehoboam ultimately responded the way he did? Can you think of any other examples that demonstrate Rehoboam’s wisdom or lack of it?
- Eventually, the Kingdom of Judah was weakened by the departure of the Northern tribes. Yet, we learn in chapter 11 that the kingdom became STRONG. What caused the kingdom to become strong again, AND how does this challenge the way we sometimes view strength?
