ASSIGNMENT #5 – June 2026
In our previous lesson we learned that David had everything (at least character-wise) to be a great leader. In fact, we could say that he “measured up” to what God was looking for in a king. However, there was more for David to learn before he was truly ready to rule well!
This month’s reading covers 2 Samuel chapters 2-4. These chapters deal with the early years of David’s reign when the kingdom was fragmented. During these years David had position, but lacked the power to rule. It is these chapters that helped shape or FORM David into the leader he would ultimately become.

Read through this assignment and answer the following questions:
- Why does Abner play such an important role in these chapters? He’s not the king, yet so much of the story seems to revolve around him. Why?
- After Joab kills Abner, what does David do? Why does David respond the way he does?
- Why did the men who killed Ishbosheth think David would reward them for what they did? What did they fail to understand about David?
